The use of carbon fiber has grown in popularity among bicycle manufacturers over the past few decades. Carbon bicycle frames have moved from an exotic, unreliable material to only the highest-end enduro bikes, and now is one of the most commonly used materials.
There are many advantages on Carbon frames.
1.Lighter Weight: Carbon frames are generally lighter, which makes the bike feel more nimble overall, and the reduced weight also makes the bike easier to handle.
2.Easy Tuneable: Carbon makes it easier to adjust the process to your needs, which means we can control the wall thickness in a particular place, making it stronger and stiffer, also thinner and more flexible
3.Rust resistance: Unlike aluminium or steel frames carbon will not rust.
4.Anti-fatigue: As long as it doesn't crash, and keep good framework maintenance, carbon frames should theoretically be durable. But steel or aluminum frames will fatigue on some day.
Life of Carbon Frame
The manufacturers producing carbon fiber frames general consensus is that the average lifes of carbon is 5 to 7 years if often riding and 7 to 10 years if not often riding. However, it mostly depends on how the carbon is layered during the manufacturing process, what resins are used and how they are used.and if riders can keep maintain the bike carefully, the bikes life will last longer than theoretical.
Whether Carbon Frames Break and Crack Easily?
It depends on the carbon frame quality. Carbon frames get their strength from good design and a good manufacturing process. Many carbon frames can be tested under IS04210 or brand own standard. as long as their quality is passed,it carbon frames is not easily to get broken.
As the technology has matured, carbon bikes have become more reliable, and cracks have become less common. If you notice a crack in the frame, stop riding.
Extremely Temperature will affect Carbon Fibre Frames?
Neither high nor low temperatures cause any problems with the carbon fiber frame. The resins typically used to make carbon fibers can withstand temperatures as high as 220 degrees Fahrenheit (104.4 degrees Celsius). So for daily riding, the temperature does not affect the strength of the carbon fiber.
How to Inspect the Carbon Frame?
If you've just been in a bike accident, it's imperative that you do a careful inspection. Once the carbon fiber is damaged, it may suddenly fail! If it is used normally, it can be checked by appearance to see if there is any damage.
A.Make sure to check the stressed areas of the frame such as: around the bottom bracket, headset, rear dropouts etc. Also, check for any brake mounts or pivots around.
B.You also can take a coin and gently tap around the surface. The normal is a "treble" tick. A abnormal carbon frame can sound a dull sound.
C.If you keep in doubt and not sure whether there is any damage on frames.- the best way to check cracks or damage is to scan it with an ultrasound. It can cost some money, but it can keep you safe when you are riding and avoid a frame break.
Damaged Carbon Bike Frame Can Be Repaired.
Any carbon frame can be repaired, no matter how badly damaged. Carbon fiber is a great restoration material because it is so easy to work with and the restored material will usually be as strong as the original, if not stronger.
The way to repair a damaged carbon fiber bike frame is to lay down new carbon fiber where it was damaged, then epoxidize it in the same direction as the original carbon fiber.
In a conclusion,Carbon fibre is widely used and trusted by most high-end bike manufacturers. It is now a material that is reliable and durable for most bike-related applications. However, like any material, it does have its limits and the strength of carbon fibre does depend on how well it’s constructed (also like any metal frame). This is why it’s important to use a reliable brand, so you know they have been built correctly.
